There's an old saying about fire and money: a terrible master, but a great servant. We use it at Fixer School for AI, because it's the clearest way to explain how a tradesman should use it.
AI is a terrible master, but a great servant. Put it to work while you're still the boss.
The servant: what AI is good at
AI is good at the work nobody got into the trades to do:
- Writing. Estimates, follow-up texts, review requests, plain-English explanations, invoice notes, website pages.
- Answering. Taking calls when you're on a ladder, asking the right questions, texting you the summary.
- Organizing. Job photos, receipts, customer notes, schedules.
- Reminding. Follow-ups, unpaid invoices, seasonal check-ins.
- Explaining. Turning a product data sheet or a code section into a short summary (that you double-check).
These are the jobs that eat your evenings. Handing them to a servant gives you your nights back, and makes you look more professional than the competition.
The master: where AI gets you in trouble
AI becomes a terrible master when you let it make the decisions:
- Pricing. AI doesn't know your costs, your market, or what you're worth. It'll happily make up a number.
- Diagnosis. It can't see the job. It doesn't know what's behind the wall.
- Promises. "Guaranteed to last 20 years." "We'll be there in an hour." If AI says it to a customer, you said it.
- Facts it makes up. AI can be confidently wrong, about code, about measurements, about anything. It doesn't know when it doesn't know.
- Your voice. Let AI write everything without reading it, and you sound like every other company. Customers can tell.
How to stay the boss
- AI drafts. You decide. Read everything before it goes out.
- You set the prices. Always.
- Check every number. Measurements, quantities, math.
- Keep your name on it. Your phone number, your business name, your voice.
- Start with one job. Pick the task that wastes the most of your time and hand only that to AI. Get comfortable, then add the next one.
Why it matters now
The people trying to get between you and your customers are already using AI, all day, every day. Lead-gen operators build hundreds of websites with it and answer every call with it. See how lead-gen sites steal your customers' calls. National franchises use it to answer and book faster than you can.
A local tradesman who uses AI as a servant can answer just as fast, follow up just as well, and still do the better work under his own name. A tradesman who ignores it falls further behind every year. And one who lets it run the business ends up with a business that isn't really his.
Where to start
- AI phone help for a one-man shop
- Writing estimates in minutes with AI
- AI that follows up on every quote
- Getting more reviews with AI
- AI for your trade: handymen, plumbers, electricians, HVAC, roofers, painters
That's what Fixer School is for: tradesmen helping tradesmen put AI to work, while staying the boss.
