For a one-man shop, the phone is the business. And the phone always rings when you're on a roof, under a sink, or driving. Homeowners rarely leave voicemails anymore; they call the next name on the list. Here's how to make sure every caller gets an answer.
Level 1: Smart voicemail + instant text
The simplest setup. Record a short, clear greeting with your name and what you do, and turn on an automatic text reply to missed calls: "Thanks for calling [Business]. I'm on a job and will call you back within two hours. What's going on and what's your address?" Many phone carriers and business phone apps support this.
Level 2: An answering service
A human answering service takes messages for you. It works, but it costs per call or per month, and the person answering doesn't know your trade.
Level 3: An AI receptionist
AI phone assistants can now answer in a natural voice under your business name, ask the questions you set (what's the problem, address, how urgent, best time), and send you a summary by text or email. Some can book appointments into your calendar.
Set it up well: - Write the questions you'd ask yourself. - Tell it what counts as an emergency and how to reach you. - Have it say it's an assistant for your business. Be honest with your customers; nobody likes being fooled. - Read every summary the same day and call people back.
What it's not
An AI receptionist isn't a salesman. It collects information so you can call back fast. It shouldn't give prices, diagnose problems or make promises.
Why it matters
The lead-gen operators competing for your customers answer every call 24/7, often with AI. See how lead-gen sites steal your customers' calls. When your phone answers too, under your own name, you stop losing those jobs.
Start small
Turn on the missed-call text this week. Watch how many callers reply. Then decide whether to go further. This is the first build in the Fixer School program for exactly that reason: it pays for itself the fastest.
