Plumbing is urgent work. When a pipe bursts or a water heater quits, the customer calls the first plumber who picks up. If you're under a sink with your hands full, that call goes to someone else, often a lead-gen line that sells it to the highest bidder. Here's how a plumber can put an AI assistant to work without changing how you do the actual plumbing.
- Answer every call. An AI phone helper can answer under your business name, ask what's going on, how urgent it is and the address, and text you a summary. You call back between jobs. Even a smart voicemail plus an instant text reply ("Got your call, I'll call you back by 3") saves jobs.
- Triage emergencies. Set up simple questions: is water actively leaking? Is the main shut off? Do they know where the shutoff is? You decide what's an emergency, but you hear about it in seconds, not hours.
- Turn your notes into estimates. Talk through the job into your phone ("replace 50-gallon gas water heater, new flex lines, haul away old unit, expansion tank") and have the AI write a clean, itemized estimate. You set the prices.
- Follow up on every quote. Most quotes die because nobody follows up. AI can draft a friendly follow-up text two days later, so every quote gets one.
- Write the explanations. Customers don't know what a PRV, a dielectric union or a failed anode rod is. Ask the AI for a plain-English explanation you can send with the estimate. Check it before it goes out.
- Ask for reviews. A short, polite review request after every job, with your link. Reviews are what get you named by Google and by AI search tools when the next homeowner asks who to call.
- Organize photos and paperwork. Before and after photos filed by customer and address, permits and receipts listed, warranty info on the water heater you installed. It makes the callback next year easy.
What to keep human
Pricing, diagnosis, code questions, and anything that goes to the customer as a promise. AI drafts; you decide. As we say at Fixer School: AI is a terrible master, but a great servant.
Why it matters now
The companies trying to sit between you and your customers already use AI to answer calls around the clock. See how lead-gen sites steal your customers' calls. A local plumber who answers fast, follows up and shows up under his own name wins those customers back.
Start with one of these this week. Most plumbers start with the call answering, because that's where the money leaks.
